Experts predict that the division of labor will shift between machines and humans by 2025. This event may displace around 85 million jobs but 97 million new roles are expected to come from the transformation. This information was culled from the World Economic Forum report and it focused on skills and jobs of the future. Some jobs that may not survive include bookkeepers, administrative assistants, and payroll clerks. However, some growing roles include artificial intelligence and data roles as well as jobs in cloud computing, software engineering, and product development. 

Also, content production, sales, and marketing jobs are on the rise alongside other roles that require soft skills. Technology is predicted to play a large role in the future of work and this led to the Industry 4.0 concept. Tech adoption will grow, and in-demand skills will change over the next few years. The skill gap will be high, and up to half of the present workforce will need to reskill before 2025. The Covid-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the economy, and increasing automation has made it necessary for jobs to transform faster.

Some workers in the vulnerable job category may need to move to new careers. For this, they will need to be reskilled. The report from WEF suggests that 94% of businesses expect their employees to learn new skills. Two top skills on the list are problem-solving and critical thinking skills. They are expected to grow in five years. Both skills have been on the report since 2016. Microlearning will come in handy to promote upskilling and reskilling. Learning in small bits will help workers to reach their goals while still working. 

Skills of the Future 

The skills are grouped into four categories and they are:

  1. Problem-solving: critical thinking, analytical thinking, complex problem solving, creativity, problem-solving, and ideation.
  2. Self-management: resilience, active learning, stress tolerance, and flexibility.
  3. Working with people: social influence, leadership, 
  4. Technology use: tech design, tech use, control, and monitoring. Tech programming and design.

The report suggests that 40% of the workforce will require around six months to reskill. This period will be higher for others in the healthcare and consumer industry. For all these people, it may take close to three months for them to master new skills in data, product development, and AI. For engineering and cloud skills, a four-month program may be sufficient to help them take up the job roles.

Training in such cases may be delivered internally, but there will still be a need to rely on online learning platforms such as Jobtraininghub and external consultants as well. For tech programming skills, employees can sign up for free coding classes. These classes have been helpful in mastering coding which is useful in so many career paths, most importantly, tech. The demand for tech staff has risen over the years, and this year was an all-time high despite the pandemic. Some careers became more important during this period because of the services offered to provide solutions for both businesses and individuals.

Digital technology has made it easier to learn a new skill. However, employees will need funding in some cases and time to pursue these opportunities to upskill. This same tech disruption that is changing the future of work can create more jobs when all the necessary skills are in place. Several EdTech players are already identifying opportunities to support the reskilling and rapid training needs the workforce needs to remain employable and relevant.
